So many of my friends in Gaza have asked me recently, ‘why are donations stopping? Does nobody care for us anymore?’ I don’t know how to answer them.
Emotional Detritus
written by me June 29th 2024
the grief comes in waves,
in trickles and in storms.
it falls from the sky
and blows from the north.
building layer upon layer
until my heart is sedimentary stone.
Archaeologists of the future
will take a core sample
from my chest
and point out to students
in lecture halls
This tragedy, and This,
and This one right here
and students will gawk
and they’ll whisper to friends,
“can you imagine how the world didn’t end?”
as each of them trudges
and secretly gasps
through storms of their own.
